What is causing my back pain?

There are many different forms of back pain and many different things which can cause all lead to back pain. Here at Dynamic Osteopaths we see many different forms of back pain, many of which can be non-specific and others can be injury induced. Below are 2 common forms of back pain we see

1) non-specific lower back pain.

This more often than not is often related to poor posture or poor habits.

2) spine arthritis.

Age related degenerative condition. This is often brought on from progressive degenerative changes to the spinal discs and vertical joints. Over a period of time, joints and soft tissues cannot deal with added stresses and strains and therefore become irritated and inflammed.

3) sciatica.

Sciatica is a term which refers to a spinal nerve roots becoming compressed giving symptoms down the leg. Often brought up in 2 common forms – 1) acute injury/trauma causing disc prolapse into the nerve root, and 2) advanced spinal disc degeneration and consequently bone growth into and exiting nerve root.

4) sacroiliac joint pain

The sacroiliac joint is the joint between the spine and the pelvis which allows and transmits forces between the two structures. Occasionally, like any of a joint, this can become irritated and very painful.

All of the conditions above are very common but can be treated easily with the correct principles. Surgery should be a last resort, when symptoms are so far advanced that conservative measures will not be convenient. Or, when red flags are shown, like incontinence or when systemic influences are present.

Here at Dynamic Osteopaths we try and find out the root cause to why and how your back pain has developed in the first place. Will use hands-on treatment aimed at restoring spinal mobility to take pressure off irritated structures. This then allows joints and soft tissues to self repair and heal. At the same time as manual hands-on techniques commonly used in osteopathic treatment, physical rehabilitation therapy like strengthening exercises to restore functional mobility can be introduced.
